visiting Our Dentist

Parents, thank you for visiting "Our Dentist", Chatswood. We are family dentists who see children regularly and have kids of our own who, like you, we cherish. We are dedicated to helping your children form a positive attitude toward their dental care. We aim to offer a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and a gentle manner.

We believe that good children's dentistry involves education of the child and a preventive approach. For young children minimum intervention is the right strategy. Children's enamel is thinner than in adults and if decay occurs, its progression can be rapid. We therefore recommend six monthly preventative examinations, cleans and topical fluoride treatments.

We believe it is important to gain your child's trust by early familiarization. This may mean your child simply looking on at your appointment and having a ride on the dental chair before the real appointment, which is ideally at 4 years.

Parents can help their children by talking positively about the dental visit.

Remember a parent can unwittingly create anxious feelings in children by speaking of negative childhood experiences (dentistry has changed for the better).

Doing fillings for children 6 & under is a challenge as they have a short attention span and will not always open their mouth wide enough. Yes, even in the fluoride era decay can be present and fillings are sometimes required. For children we often use Nitrous Oxide, (Happy Gas), as an excellent relaxant and safe aid to dental treatment.

first appointment

Please remember talk positively about the dental visit.
At the first visit we do an examination, clean and fluoride, give oral hygiene instruction and assess future orthodontic requirements, if any.

If a hole is present we will usually place a temporary filling and make a second appointment as rushing a child who is unfamiliar with the surroundings may cause long term dental stress to them. We do not believe pushing children beyond his or her limits.

Children like rewards so we often give out stickers, balloons and toothbrushes for opening their mouth wide.

fissure sealants

This is an excellent preventive measure we recommend which requires no drilling. In newly erupted permanent molars composite is bonded into the deep fissures where decay can occur more easily.

orthodontics

During children' regular preventative examinations we monitor the eruption patterns and jaw relationships of their teeth. Where necessary we refer to local experienced orthodontists for active treatment.

* Hints on Oral Hygiene - Dental Tips *

Parents and dentists should educate children in the right foods for dental health. A balanced diet is best, try to minimize sticky, sugar-laden foods. It is better to offer your children single lolly treats rather than frequent treats during the day. The latter means their teeth are under "constant" acid attack. Try to brush after any sugar treats.

We recommend that parents supervise brushing as kids generally tend to rush their brushing, which should take at least two minutes. Babies' teeth should be brushed without toothpaste initially and small amounts of fluoride toothpaste introduced at twelve months.

Bedtime bottles

Bedtime bottles cause the contact time required for decay of baby teeth.

Try to use water instead of milk where possible for comfort bottles at bedtime. Frequent snacking during the day of carbonated soft drinks or energy drinks can cause enamel erosion. The safest thirst quencher is water.
